Gaharu Community

Not Alone..

Object of Desire and
Symbol of Luxury

Aquilaria, known as Gaharu or Agarwood, has been an object of desire and symbol of luxury for nearly 3,000 years in both Hindi and Muslim cultures. Its unique scent and uses make it a highly sought-after commodity.

Interestingly, the Catholic church and the Pope also use Gaharu during processions and blessings, highlighting its cross-cultural significance and importance.

The value of Gaharu has transcended cultural and religious boundaries throughout history, from ancient times to modern day. Its significance in the perfume industry, as well as in spiritual and religious practices, has made it a vital part of many cultures. At Prima Plantations Indonesia, we take great care to uphold the cultural and historic significance of Gaharu while also investing in its sustainable cultivation and usage.

Extinction & CITES

Natural Agarwood resin is on the brink of extinction due to illegal poaching and unsustainable production practices. The Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) has classified natural Aquilaria trees as an endangered species, with wildlife experts suggesting that the global population has declined by 80% in the last 150 years. Furthermore, most remaining natural Aquilaria trees are insufficiently infected by natural fungi, with estimates suggesting that only 2% of wild trees can produce Agarwood naturally.

Added, despite being a rapidly growing business over the past five decades the reputation of Gaharu or this "black gold" has been tarnished by the unethical practices of a few investment companies, destroying the market for the good ones. This has been due to the selling of individual trees at inflated rates, which has led to widespread scepticism towards the industry.
